Remember the 1995 film "Balto", by Steven Wells? yeah, it was impressive! however: it is FALSE! the film was only meant to make Balto look like a true hero. Balto was never half-dog and half-wolf, no sir! he was 100% pure Siberian husky!
Balto was named after Samuel Balto, a Sami explorer.
Balto died on 1933, March 14th
Balto was born in 1919
What really happened:
Leonard Seppala, owner of lots of dogs (mostly Siberian husky.) trained his young dogs sledding, Leonard kept saying to fellow sledders "Siberian huskies are the best at sled racing."
Leonard's favorite dog in his team was named "Togo", the reason is, one time, Leonard went on a trip. And Togo escaped his pen and followed Leonard. And when Leonard came back, that was the only time he realized Togo was following him!
Leonard's friend. "Gunnar", always had high hopes for the Siberian husky: Balto. Balto always had great strength but lack of speed. Balto can pull an anvil but this brawn was not what made Balto a hero...
one day... in the year 1925, in the small town of Alaska: "Nome", an epidemic called "diphtheria epidemic" was spreading throughout the young ones in Nome. The doctors ran out of the cure: anti-toxin, they used a mores code to the Alaskan government to send anti-toxin in any way... people first used technology and used planes. However: a hideous blizzard caused the plane engines to freeze and get jammed. Then, they tried another approach, they tried to sail upon seas... however, the waters were rogue and the tide was high... the boat couldn't make it. They only had one more choice... sled dogs!
Gunnar and Balto went over to the town "Bluff", and many more teams lined up town after town...
Gunnar first cleaned his sled dog's paws... paws were very important, because if a dog had something on his/her paw, then it would slow the entire team down. Gunnar also inspected the eyes of his team.
In two days, the medicine arrived. The team started moving. The smell of the Tokhok lake as they passed by. But then, The sled team suddenly stopped, Gunnar switched lead dog... no results, he switched it again... nothing. Gunnar saw this before... they lost scent of the trail. Balto started struggling. Gunnar glanced at him. Balto was signaling him that he still had the scent! Gunnar wasted no time, he made Balto lead dog and they took off!
They arrived at Nome, everyone cheering them on. Everyone crowded Gunnar but Gunnar kept refusing that he got credit. "It is not me, it is Balto." Gunnar kept replying. Gunnar was indeed a generous man. And Balto was remembered from this day and forward.
However, Leonard was furious that Togo got no credit at all for doing one of the most dangerous parts of all! Togo just so happened to have saved a day-worth journey by crossing a frozen lake. But still, Leonard demanded that Togo got some credit.
Balto died at the age of 14, he had blindness and hind leg disease. The doctors had no choice but to end him with one little "medicine" that ended his life immediately.
